OK, so it’s just a bit of rusty machinery to you but not to me. When we were clearing out my late dad’s yard I just couldn’t toss this out. It’s an old Chaff Cutter and we used it to chop up lucerne for the chooks, geese and ducks we had. You had to feed the lucerne into the chute and turn the handle to rotate the blades. I loved the sound it made and despite the fact there are absolutely no safety guards to stop your fingers going into the blades I still have all mine and so do my brothers. This bit of rusty junk brings back to me the smell of fresh cut lucerne and a sense of the freedom and fun we had growing up at a time when kids were presumed to be safe and just had to be home before dark. I didn’t grow up in the country, we lived only 15 to 20 minutes from the Adelaide, South Australia CBD but we did have a larger than normal sized, house block.
